Acne cream, gels, lotions and patches showed 33% unit growth in independent stores in 2015-2017, compared to 16.7% growth in chain pharmacies, according to Hamacher Resource Group.“You have to choose your partners wisely and choose your categories. If you do that well, do your homework, I think there’s an opportunity” to grow sales in independent pharmacies, says Hamacher VP Dave Wendland.

External pain relief ointments and gels showed 23.5% growth in units sold in US independent pharmacies between 2015 and 2017, ahead of the category's 9% growth in chain pharmacies, according to Hamacher Resource Group. Noting niche OTC product categories sell particularly well in independent outlets, Hamacher VP Dave Wendland says the 22,000-strong independent pharmacy channel still presents opportunities for OTC marketers.
