In an April 28 letter, FDA directs manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers to "immediately review their in-transit and warehouse security practices" to prevent cargo theft - an increasing industry problem (1"The Tan Sheet" March 1, 2010). Firms should proactively plan a response to a theft "since swift action is essential" to protect the public, the agency said. It explained stolen products can cause adverse events if stored or handled improperly. If products are stolen, firms should promptly notify FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations and the public. In some cases firms will need to recall products with the same lot numbers as the stolen products, FDA said. The agency typically will ask the firm for details about the stolen product, a risk assessment and an action plan
