Von Eschenbach asks for legislation

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach, emphasizing initiatives to "recreate" the agency, says he is asking Congress to enact 10 pieces of legislation requested in the Food Protection Plan by the end of May. "We need authority to better regulate the food supply ... and I call on Congress to grant these new authorities by Memorial Day," he said Feb. 29 in Washington at the National Press Club (1"The Tan Sheet" Dec. 17, 2007, p. 10). Von Eschenbach described FDA's steps to change in a world that is "rapidly changing" and has "great promise, but great peril." He also referenced initiatives FDA is currently working on, including Safety First as well as the Food Protection Plan (see 2related story)...
