House Government Reform Committee Chairman Tom Davis (R-Va.) will introduce a bill the week of May 23 proposing a uniform drug testing policy for major professional sports leagues, including MLB, the NFL and the NBA. Co-authored by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the legislation likely will suggest similar penalties to Rep. Cliff Stearns' (R-Fla.) Drug Free Sports Act, which calls for minimum two-year bans for first offenses and lifetime bans for second offenses. The House Government Reform Committee held a hearing on the NBA's drug policy on the heels of an NFL meeting in April (1"The Tan Sheet" May 2, 2005, p. 14)...
