Executive Summary
IoM Food & Nutrition Board will accept comments on its proposed definitions of fiber until May 31, after which it will establish final definitions that will appear in upcoming report setting dietary reference intakes for macronutrients; report is due out by year-end. Proposed definitions distinguish between: dietary fiber, "non-digestible carbohydrates and lignin that are intrinsic and intact in plants"; added fiber, "isolated, non-digestible carbohydrates that have beneficial physiological effects in humans"; and total fiber, "the sum of dietary fiber and added fiber."
