Salma "marches" for folic acid

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

Actress Salma Hayek teams with the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation in a public service campaign to raise awareness of folic acid supplementation for the prevention of neural tube defects. The full-color ad will run in Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair and other magazines and features an "attention-getting" photo of Hayek, along with the text, "Salma Hayek is not pregnant." The ad reinforces the need for women to take 400 mcg/day of folic acid well before they choose to have a child, the nonprofit group notes. The March of Dimes has been lobbying for the passage of the "Children's Health Act," which contains funding for folic acid research and outreach. The bill passed the House May 9 and was referred to the Senate Health & Education Committee. Companion legislation reportedly also is in the works (1"The Tan Sheet" May 15, p. 16)
