Executive Summary
White House-appointed working group will examine unlawful conduct involving use of the Internet, according to an executive order published in the Aug. 11 Federal Register. The group will develop recommendations concerning the extent to which existing federal laws provide a sufficient basis for investigation and prosecution of unlawful conduct involving the medium and the extent to which new technology tools, capabilities or legal authorities are necessary for effective investigation and prosecution. The group also will examine the potential for new or existing tools and capabilities to educate users on minimizing and preventing risks from unlawful Internet conduct. The working group, chaired by Attorney General Janet Reno, will present its report and recommendations to the President and Vice President in 120 days.
