Executive Summary
Bill prohibiting "unauthorized destruction, modification or alteration of product identification codes" on items including OTC and dietary supplements may to be the subject of a hearing in the House by the end of July. Senate companion legislation is also expected to be introduced during July. The bill (HR 2100) was introduced by Robert Goodlatte (R-Va.) June 9 and is strongly supported by the Consumer Healthcare Products Association and at least five pharmaceutical firms, including Warner-Lambert, Novartis, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Procter & Gamble and Pfizer. Goodlatte introduced similar legislation, the Trademark Anticounterfeiting Act, last session but the bill did not pass the House (1"The Tan Sheet" Oct. 5, 1998, p. 27)
