Executive Summary
Food Stamp Vitamin and Mineral Improvement Act (S 1307) introduced in the Senate June 30 by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa); cosponsors are Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). The bill would allow food stamps be used to purchase a "nutritional supplement providing a vitamin or mineral." It has been referred to the Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry Committee; a hearing is expected. Similar legislation has been sponsored before - Hatch introduced a measure in August 1995 that would have allowed food stamps be used to purchase amino acids and herbs
