This article was originally published in Scrip

Executive Summary

In 2007, just over $2.5 billion was spent worldwide on R&D for the so-called neglected diseases, almost 80% of which went to the ‘big three’ – tuberculosis, malaria and HIV infection. The remainder, according to a recent report from the Australian George Institute for International Health, was shared between upwards of 20 bacterial and protozoal infections, and infestations with various types of parasitic worm, that affect mainly people living in developing countries.
