AHPA revises extract labeling requirement, guidance

Executive Summary
The American Herbal Products Association revises requirements for its members' use of the word "extract" in herbal ingredients. The requirements prohibit use on labeling for members' products of the word "extract" to "describe plant materials that have not been extracted with one or more solvents," and bans quantitative extraction ratios in labeling if the product is not an extract or between the fresh and dried weight on the herb, the trade group announced April 1. Previously the requirement restricted against using "extract to describe dehydrated plant materials that have not been subject to additional processing other than size reduction, such as cutting or milling." AHPA members must comply by Sept. 11 to "remain in good standing.
