FDA seeks comments on nutrition facts study, food survey

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

The agency requests comments on two separate proposed studies - "Experimental Study of Nutrition Facts Label Formats" and "Real Time Surveys of Consumers' Knowledge, Perceptions, and Reported Behavior Concerning Food-borne Illness Outbreaks or Food Recalls," according to Nov. 18 Federal Register notices. The nutrition facts study aims to "quantitatively assess consumer reactions to potential options for modifying the Nutrition Facts label format." The Web-based food-borne illness survey seeks the reactions and knowledge of outbreaks and food recalls of approximately 30,000 U.S. consumers. FDA will use the information to "adjust its communication strategies and messages for food-borne illness outbreaks or food recalls." FDA seeks comments on whether the proposals are necessary, suggestions for improving the study/survey design and whether the agency's cost estimates are accurate
