Abbott's green initiatives

Executive Summary

Redesigned packaging helped Abbott reduce plastic in infant formula containers 15 percent in 2008, and the manufacturer says it has eliminated 2.88 million pounds of packaging annually since 2007. The changes are among the the Abbott Park, Ill., firm's sustainable packaging initiatives, producing results such as the nutrition unit saving 436,000 gallons of gasoline annually transporting lighter polypropylene plastic bottles. Less packaging also means fewer emissions, less waste, lower costs and potentially less shelf space, Abbott said Sept. 16.
