Exposure to taurine and d-glucuronolactone through regular energy drink consumption is safe, the European Food Safety Authority says Feb. 12. A recent review of data collected by a European Commission committee in 2003 removes concerns that taurine could harm the brain and d-glucuronolactone could damage kidneys. The data found no observed adverse effect at a daily level of 1,000 mg per kilogram of body weight for both substances. The ingredients likely will not interact with caffeine or alcohol, EFSA said
