Executive Summary
John Dingell, D-Mich., breaks the record Feb. 11 as the longest-serving member of the House of Representatives with 53 years. Dingell replaced his father as a representative Jan. 3, 1956. A long-time health care advocate, Dingell introduced national health insurance legislation in every Congress since 1957, helped the Children's Health Insurance Program become law in 1997 and oversaw the passage of Medicare. He recently lost the Energy and Commerce chairmanship to Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., but is the committee's "chairman emeritus.
