Research & Development In Brief

Executive Summary

Vitamin C and blood pressure: Vitamin C may influence blood pressure in female young adults, according to a study in the Dec. 18 Nutrition Journal. Led by Gladys Block, of the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley, the 10-year longitudinal study evaluated 242 healthy Caucasian and black women ages 18-21. Researchers found plasma ascorbic acid was inversely associated with blood pressure and change in blood pressure, a key finding since "lowering blood pressure or attenuating increases in BP in healthy young adults may lead to lower BP in older adults and reduced risk of age-associated vascular events," they write, adding that further research is warranted
