Executive Summary
The European Food Safety Authority's panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies announces Aug. 19 the launch of a public consultation on its "draft general principles" for establishing Dietary Reference Values. EFSA says its open consultation's goal is to gather additional scientific information that could add to its work in establishing DRVs for the European Union for energy, water, macronutrients and micronutrients. The agency aims to establish DRVs for energy, water and macronutrients, which include carbohydrates and proteins, by 2009, EFSA says. Work will begin on micronutrients, which include iron and selenium, in mid-2009, according to the agency. The public consultation period closes December 15
