House Appropriations subcommittee Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., urges FDA to examine the long-term health and safety implications of infant formulas sweetened with sucrose in a June 6 letter to FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach. Sucrose erodes tooth enamel faster than other sugars and some studies suggest including it in infant formula may increase consumption and lead to rapid weight gain in the first year, DeLauro states, citing a May New York Times report. According to the report, the European Union's Scientific Committee on Food found sucrose provided no nutritional advantages and may lead to excessive consumption, leading to the 27 countries of the E.U. resolving to ban sucrose-sweetened formulas by the end of 2009, DeLauro says...
