Wal-mart adopts food safety standards

Wal-Mart is the first U.S.-based chain to require suppliers of its private label and other food items to comply with Global Food Safety Initiatives standards, the Bentonville, Ark.-based firm says Feb. 4. All of the suppliers must have their factories audited by a third party and be certified between July and December 2008, according to a release.
