Selenium suppresses HIV

"Daily selenium supplementation can suppress the progression of HIV-1 viral burden and provide indirect improvement" of helper T cell (CD4) count, according to a study published Jan. 22 in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Barry E. Hurwitz, Ph.D., Behavioral Medicine Research Center, University of Miami, Miami, Fla., et al., conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial with 262 patients with HIV. Nutrition 21 provided capsules containing 200 mcg of high-selenium yeast for 141 participants and the remaining 121 took a capsule containing inactive yeast and filler material. "Given the challenges of using conventional pharmacotherapy to achieve and maintain virologic suppression in HIV-spectrum disease, our results support the use of selenium as a simple, inexpensive and safe adjunct therapy," the authors conclude...
