"Half of medical students surveyed used multivitamins and 19% used calcium supplements, at least once per week as freshmen," according to a longitudinal study in the December Journal of the American Dietetic Association. Elsa Spencer, PhD, et al., tracked 970 students across three years from 16 schools nationwide using a questionnaire detailing dietary supplement use. The authors found medical students were more likely to use multivitamins if they exercised regularly, had children, were underweight, or were women who were not heavy users of alcohol.
