Eating a Mediterranean diet high in fruits, vegetables and olive oil and low in red meat is associated with a lower risk for Alzheimer's disease, according to an article published online recently by the Archives of Neurology. The association between the diet and reduced disease risk was present even in individuals with vascular diseases, Nikolaos Scarmeas, MD, Columbia University Medical Center, New York, et al., conclude. Scarmeas et al. monitored 1,984 adults, 194 of whom already had Alzheimer's. The researchers assigned a score of zero to nine to each participant's diet and conducted neurological exams and brain function tests.
