Executive Summary

Effective provider-reimbursement policies for tobacco control need to be developed to make progress towards the public health benefits of quitting tobacco use, according to a 14-member NIH State-of-the-Science conference panel on tobacco use. The panel, which met June 12-14, pointed out that tobacco use remains the U.S.'s leading preventable cause of premature death with more than 440,000 American deaths per year as a result of a tobacco-related disease.
