Executive Summary

Mead Johnson is issuing a recall of 41,464 GENTLEASE powdered infant formula cans due to contamination with metal particles up to 2.7 mm in size, FDA announces Feb. 22. Though no injuries have been reported to date, the particles could damage an infant's respiratory system and throat if inhaled into the lungs. Damage to the throat may cause coughing, difficulty swallowing or difficulty breathing, according to FDA, while similar damage to the lungs could provoke coughing and difficulty breathing. The 24-ounce cans were distributed through major retail stores across the country beginning Dec. 16, 2005.
