Executive Summary
An extract of the herb kudzu "may be a useful adjunct in reducing alcohol intake in a naturalistic setting," Scott Lukas, PhD, McLean Hospital, Belmont, Mass, et al., report in the May issue of Alcoholism. The study followed 14 subjects in their 20s, all of whom regularly consume three or four alcoholic drinks per day. Participants were given either kudzu or placebo for seven days, then placed in a laboratory that was set up as an apartment with a TV, reclining chair and refrigerator full of beer. Over 90-minute periods, treatment with kudzu "resulted in a significant reduction in the number of beers consumed that was paralleled by an increase in the number of sips and the time to consume each beer and a decrease in the volume of each sip," the authors find...
