"The vitamin D status of the mother during pregnancy and lactation should be taken into consideration by infant health care providers in establishing the need for supplementation," Frank Greer, University of Wisconsin Medical School, says in "Vitamin D & Health in the 21st Century," a supplement to the December American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The "ideal" supplement should contain only vitamin D to prevent deficiency and "rickets for all infants and children, including those with chronic diseases, who may have decreased vitamin D absorption."
