Executive Summary
Zinc and iron supplementation promote motor development and "exploratory behavior" in Bangladeshi infants, according to a study published in the October American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Two-hundred twenty-one infants were randomly assigned to receive either 20 mg of iron, 20 mg of zinc, a combination of the two, a micronutrient mix of 16 vitamins and minerals or riboflavin weekly for six to 12 months. Maureen Black, University of Maryland-Baltimore, et al., assessed development and behavior at six- and 12-month endpoints using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development II and the Home Observation Measurement of Environment scale.
