Executive Summary
FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Howard Beales will leave the commission Aug. 6 to become associate professor of strategic management & public policy at George Washington University. Agency Chairman Timothy Muris praises Beales' record in a July 16 release, noting his leadership "yielded impressive law enforcement results, with the agency filing 258 federal district court cases and obtaining nearly $1.3 bil. in consumer redress." Beales also helped drive the commission's privacy agenda as a "prime mover" in creating and implementing the National "Do Not Call Registry" and anti-spam efforts. Bureau of Consumer Protection Deputy Director Lydia Parnes will be named acting director and assume Beales' duties. Parnes joined FTC in 1981, serving in her current post since 1992.
