Executive Summary
American Medical Association "strongly opposes" FDA's decision to "allow a lower standard - the so-called weight of the scientific evidence standard - to be used in deciding whether a health claim can be placed on the labeling of a conventional food product," according to Feb. 21 comments. The "weight of the scientific evidence standard" would allow the use of health claims "that have a reasonable chance of being erroneous" and "actually could confuse consumers" rather than help them to make informed decisions, the medical group contends.
