University of Oslo researchers find four-year-olds "have higher mental processing scores when the mothers are supplemented" with DHA, EPA fatty acids from cod liver oil during pregnancy and lactation compared with children whose mothers are supplemented with corn oil. Published in January Pediatrics, study shows 4.1-point difference in intelligence tests between two groups, which "may have limited significance on individual basis but may be of epidemiologic importance," researchers say. Ingrid Helland, MD, et al., gave 341 pregnant women either 10 mL cod liver oil or corn oil from 18th week of pregnancy until three months after giving birth; 90 children returned for cognitive function testing after four years.
