Women under 60 who took at least 362 mg/day vitamin C had 57% lower risk of developing cortical cataracts than women who took less than 140 mg/d, researchers say in March American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Allen Taylor, Tufts University, et al., also found use of vitamin C supplements for at least 10 years was associated with a 60% reduced risk of cortical cataracts compared with no use. Both findings "provide added support for a protective role for vitamin C against the formation of lens opacities," researchers conclude.
