Topical application of St. John's wort tea and other alcoholic/hydrous herbal tinctures "may provide a potent alternative for the clinical and outpatient care of bedridden patients" suffering from infected wounds and eczematous skin lesions, German researchers report at AAPS. Antje Weseler, Ruprecht-Karls-University, Heidelberg, et al., sought to investigate in vitro, antimicrobial effect of several traditional, topical European folk medicines. "Our results show that all tested plant preparations exhibited...antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria," researchers say, noting tinctures of Hamamelis virginiana L. and SJW were "very active against several Staphylococci species"
