Potential for drug interactions "should not be underestimated" based on extent of use, enterohepatic recycling similarities with many drugs, Washington State University researchers say in abstract presented at American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists annual meeting in Denver Oct. 21-25. Study examined mechanism for absorption and metabolism of ginkgo flavonoids, finding "individual aglycone components of ginkgo flavonoids such as quercetin and apigenin [are] rapidly absorbed by small intestine and colon," while absorption of glycoside components, which depends on hydrolysis, is slow. "To get absorbed more rapidly, microbial or intestinal metabolism of glycosides is necessary," study says
