Executive Summary
Approximately one-fourth of pregnancies not detected by conventional human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)-based home pregnancy tests on first day of missed period, researchers estimate in Oct. 10 JAMA. Allen Wilcox, MD, NIEHS, et al., assayed urine samples of 221 healthy women for hCG levels relative to their expected menstrual cycles. Although home pregnancy tests usually suggest use on first day of missed menses, researchers found embryonic implantation occurs subsequently in 10% of cases, so concurrent rise in hCG levels would not be detectable immediately
