Executive Summary
Increased use of complementary and alternative medicine does not reflect dissatisfaction with conventional care, David Eisenberg, MD, et al., Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, assert in Sept. 4 Annals of Internal Medicine. Researchers conducted national phone survey of 831 adults who used conventional and CAM therapies in 1997. Participants found CAM valuable for head/neck pain, but preferred conventional treatment for hypertension; survey did not specifically mention dietary supplements. Eisenberg led prior studies on prevalence of CAM use in 1990 and 1997; recent article used same cohort as 1997 study published in Nov. 11, 1998 JAMA. Article is part of Annals series on CAM
