Supplementation significantly reduces blood pressure and triglyceride levels, improves LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio, Helena Teede, PhD, Monash University, Australia, et al., say in August Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Researchers administered 40 g soy protein/118 mg isoflavones or placebo to 105 postmenopausal women and 108 men, ages 50-75, for three months. Negative effects included increase in lipoprotein A, a blood protein linked to heart disease risk; male subjects also experienced declines in endothelial function. "More research is needed, specifically in hyperlipidemic and hypertensive populations, before public health recommendations can be made," Teede et al. conclude
