Executive Summary
Consumption of 100 mL Lactobacillus GG drink five days a week has no effect on UTI recurrence in women, Finnish researchers report in June 30 British Medical Journal. Tero Kontiokari, University of Oulu, et al., suggest Lactobacillus GG may have demonstrated no preventative effect "because we were unable to induce Lactobacilli colonization in the periurethral area" and "consumption five times a week may have been too infrequent." Investigators randomized 150 women to study effectiveness of Lactobacillus GG and cranberry-lingonberry juice in preventing UTI recurrences compared to a control group. Daily consumption of 50 mL cranberry concentrate "reduced recurrences by about half" compared to controls, Kontiokari and colleagues report
