Executive Summary

Supplementation produced "no effect on positive affect, negative affect or total mood disturbance" in healthy, young adults, Bradley Cardinal, PhD, Oregon State University, et al., report in June Journal of the American Dietetic Association. Trial does not support claims chronic ginseng supplementation - at or twice clinically recommended dosage levels - enhances mood, researchers say. Eighty-three adults (mean age of 25.7) were randomized to 200 mg Panax ginseng, 400 mg ginseng or placebo for 60 days. Study's size, duration were significantly greater than most ginseng trials, researchers note, recommending further randomized studies using verified doses of ginseng, more diverse sample sizes
