Executive Summary
Lactobacillus GG "may reduce respiratory infections and their severity among children in day care," Finnish researchers report in June 2 British Medical Journal. Katja Hatakka, Valio Research & Development, et al., found probiotic milk led to 17% relative reduction in number of children suffering from respiratory infections and 19% reduction in antibiotic treatments for respiratory infections; no difference in diarrhea occurrence was noted. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 571 healthy children, ages one to six, who were given either plain milk or milk with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG three times/day, five days/week for seven winter months
