Executive Summary
Presence of any of eight major food allergens, including peanuts, soy, tree nuts and wheat, should be disclosed in "plain English...within, or in immediate proximity to, the ingredient declaration" on food packages, according to voluntary labeling guidelines released by Food Allergy Issues Alliance May 31. Manufacturers also urged to disclose presence of major food allergens when they are an intentional part of the food, such as part of a flavor or an incidental additive, regardless of source. Guidelines apply to functional foods and supplements that contain the major allergens
