Executive Summary
Patients who receive vitamin C before and after cardiac bypass surgery are less likely to develop atrial fibrillation, Clevelend Clinic Foundation researchers report at ACC conference. Fifty patients who received 2 g vitamin C the night before surgery and 500 mg twice daily for five days afterwards were matched to bypass surgery control group. Post-op atrial arrhythmias developed in six of 43 (14%) patients pretreated with vitamin C, compared to 14 of 43 (32.6%) controls. "Vitamin C may reduce the incidence of atrial fibrillation by more than half" after coronary artery bypass surgery, Mina Chung et al. say, calling for additional research to confirm this finding
