Executive Summary

Seventy-one percent of pharmacists believe proper use of OTCs is a "very important" health-promoting behavior, a Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association survey finds. Asked to rate the importance of 23 health-related behaviors for the average adult, 85% of pharmacists cited condom use as "very important" and 58% cited maintenance of normal cholesterol as "very important," Jerome Kotecki, Ball State University (Indiana), et al., write. Ninety-three percent said pharmacists should be "very involved" in counseling patients about drug contents and side effects, but only 7% said they should be involved in counseling consumers about diet modification or weight management. Data were collected from 552 Indiana-based pharmacists using a 73-item questionnaire on health promotion beliefs and practices
