Executive Summary
The tomato ingredient may inhibit the formation and spread of cancer cells in the prostate, Omar Kucuk, MD, et al., Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, preliminarily report at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Philadelphia April 12. Thirty men scheduled for radical prostatectomy received either 15 mg lycopene twice daily or no intervention for three weeks prior to surgery. After surgery, examination of the removed prostates showed cancer had not spread beyond the prostate in 67% of the treated subjects, and 84% had tumors ( 4 cm3 in size, compared to 44% and 55% in the untreated subjects, respectively
