"Hypericum (St. John's wort) appears more effective than placebo for the short-term treatment of mild to moderately severe depressive disorders," the San Antonio Evidence-based Practice Center concludes in a report on depression treatment with new drugs submitted to HHS' Agency for Health Care Policy & Research. However, "these findings are tempered by the relatively small number of trials and evidence of publication bias favoring positive trials."
