This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

Supplement may increase men's risk of prostate cancer, according to report in the August issue of Emergency Medicine. Marshall Goldberg, MD, Jefferson Medical College, says dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), increases the level of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in the bloodstream. Goldberg points to a study in the journal Science that found men with abnormally high levels of IGF-1 have a four- to seven-fold higher risk of prostate cancer. It is estimated over 1 mil. people take DHEA, which Goldberg notes "is unregulated and medically unsupervised"
