CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTATION REDUCES PMS SEVERITY BY 48% by the third menstrual cycle, according to a double-blind, placebo- controlled study in 497 women at 12 U.S. outpatient centers. The study, by Susan Thys-Jacobs, MD, et al., published in the August issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, found that 55% of women in the trial given 1,200 mg elemental calcium daily showed a >50% improvement in global symptoms of premenstrual syndrome compared to >36% given placebo, and 29% of participants given calcium pills had >75% improvement in global symptoms by the third cycle, compared with >16% receiving placebo.
