ANTIMICROBIAL HAND/BODY WASHES WOULD BENEFIT SPECIAL POPULATIONS, such as the military and individuals infected with HIV, dermatologist James Leyden, MD, University of Pennsylvania, said at FDA's Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee meeting in Bethesda, Md. July 29. Leyden identified the military, individuals with high levels of Staphylococcus aureus, such as those with atopic dermatitis or HIV, and people who have compromised stratum corneum as those who would benefit from using antimicrobial products. Another guest speaker, Elaine Larson, Georgetown University School of Nursing, said day care environments would be another setting where antiseptic agents would be useful because of the frequency of viral outbreaks.
