Executive Summary
SUPPLEMENT HEALTH CLAIMS "HIGH" STANDARD OF EVIDENCE ENDORSED by the President's Commission on Dietary Supplement Labels in the group's Nov. 24 final report on supplement labeling. "Commission members agree that a high standard of evidence is appropriate for health claims," the final report says. "A valid health claim may promote behaviors that have a beneficial effect on public health and, therefore, be associated with effects on health care costs, quality of life and productivity." The seven-member commission restates and clarifies the position on health claims expressed in its draft report released June 24 ("The Tan Sheet" June 30, pp. 17-25).
