ACID SUPPRESSERS REGARDED AS "VERY EFFECTIVE" BY HALF OF RESPONDENTS in a Louis Harris & Associates survey conducted for Astra Merck. The survey looked at the incidence of heartburn and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and examined the use of medication among heartburn sufferers. Conducted in July and August, the study involved a telephone survey of a random sample of 2,508 U.S. adults 18 and older. Nineteen percent of the adults surveyed reported taking OTC acid suppressers, with the frequency of use increasing in the older age groups.
