Executive Summary

Osteoporosis legislation and vitamin D: HR 2697, introduced by Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Tex.) Oct. 22, would authorize $47 mil. in annual spending for osteoporosis research at the National Institutes of Health through 2001, including the study of calcium's role in "building heavier and denser skeletons" and the role of vitamin D. The bill also would authorize $3 mil. for the development of public or private non-profit osteoporosis research centers. The bill and accompanying legislation that would authorize funding for the establishment of an osteoporosis information clearinghouse (HR 2704 by Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif.) will be considered as part of the overall NIH reauthorization legislation expected to be introduced early next year...
